Found object art may be more environmentally known as recycled art, or just plain trash art. But the work of Tom Deininger is anything but trash. His large found object works range from pop culture to classical replica to political critique. It’s difficult at first to capture the scale of his artwork from the small images on his Web site. But the Barbie doll in the eye of his self-portrait is a good measure for the rest of the piece. Like that image, his other works, when photographed, look like paintings, especially from a distance. But the close-ups and videos on his site capture the careful, color-coordinated placement of knickknacks, discarded electronics, buttons, toys, and even cigarette butts, that make up each fantastic piece of art.
