Gigantic, A Magazine of Short Prose and Art just launched its online version with chapter 18 of Shya Scanlon’s Forecast 42 Project, new fiction from J.A. Tyler, and art by Thomas Doyle. The online journal also houses Joe Wenderoth’s Seizure State, a soon-to-be mind-bending poetics blog.
The magazine, which debuted in print in April 2009, turned its sights online in order to publish art and fiction faster than its bi-annual print publication. The site, which will be updated weekly, was designed by the young and talented Joanna Neborsky, the fast-rising protege of Maira Kalman.
Gigantic made a huge debut with its print issue, literally–the thing was printed on white heavy-stock newsprint that folded out larger than the NYT–but figuratively as well, featuring fiction by Ed Park, Justin Taylor, Shane Jones and Anya Yurchyshyn, an interview of Malcolm Gladwell by Tao Lin, a conversation between Deb Olin Unferth and Joe Wenderoth on watching TV, and Gary Shteyngart on virile meats. And its distinct look was crafted by Erin West with interview illustrations by Andrew Bulger.
Publishing prose by a mix of both new and established writers, that is under 700 words, and sometimes unlovely, edgy, or word-conscious remains Gigantic‘s goal.
