Today we have an interview with Craig Walzer, editor of the Voice of Witness book Out of Exile: Narratives From the Abducted and Displaced People of Sudan. Craig discusses how he became involved in the project, his experiences in Sudan, and the importance of listening.
Along with Craig’s interview we also have an excerpt from Out of Exile, “I Just Want to See It Through,” the story of Alweel Kol. “I was only ten years old, so I didn’t know anything about a war. One evening, armed men came to our village to catch certain people. They attacked our home, tied up my father, and threw him to the ground.” Alweel’s is a story of loss, uncertainty, faith, family, attempted resettlement, and strength. Take the time today to read her words.
(Sidenote: If you happen to live in the San Francisco Bay Area you can hear Craig speak at The Art of Listening: Oral Histories from Voice of Witness and StoryCorps this Thursday, September 17th, at 7:00 pm at the Jewish Cultural Museum.)
