Science Saturday

Can a dead fish perceive humans and tell their emotional states? No, but the reason for the story is an interesting one.

This is the world’s most awesome science fair project. I especially like the inclusion of the Confederate Battle Flag in the lower right corner.

So the great white shark might be descended from mako sharks instead of megalodons, huh? Somehow that doesn’t make them more cuddly.

Humans might get to Mars eventually, but not unless we figure out how to deal with the radiation problem.

And finally, this is more tech than science, but given that The Rumpus is a web-based magazine, it’s important to us–the FCC is proposing a new net neutrality rule that will disallow data discrimination. This really is a big deal, especially for low-budget online organizations.

Brian Spears is Senior Poetry Editor of The Rumpus and the author of A Witness in Exile (Louisiana Literature Press, 2011). His poem “Upon Reading That Andromeda Will One Day Devour Triangulum and Come For Us Next” was featured in Season 9 of Motion Poems. More from this author →
