This week in San Francisco, geek gods at Cafe Du Nord, Michael Bartalo talks recyclable art, Ghostface Killah hangs out on Haight street, and more:
Monday 10/19: Get your nerd on at Cafe Du Nord’s W00tstock where geek gods Adam Savage, Wil Wheaton, and Paul and Storm will woo you with their widgets. $22, doors open at 6.30PM, all ages.
Tuesday 10/20: If you really loved W00tstock the first time around, you could relive the experience at Tuesday’s event, or you could boost your street cred by meeting Ghostface Killah at the Adidas concept store on Haight St. Buy some shoes and get a signed record (but don’t show off your Wil Wheaton signed Starfleet Ensign uniform form the previous evening, lest Ghostface Killah get jealous…)
Wednesday 10/21: Wednesday through Friday, immerse yourself in underground film at Artist’s Television Access’ annual film festival. For a nominal donation ($7-10), you can take in over 20 films in three days, supplying you with enough artsy conversation fodder to navigate your way through the next year’s worth of first dates. 5.30pm @ 1000 Howard St, 18+.
Graffiti 101: Stencil artist, Roman, teaches one of many classes at 1AM Gallery. For $50, enjoy two 90 minute classes made easy with all the necessary supplies. While you’re there, check out the gallery’s Dia de los Muertos inspired show, Eternal Sleep.
Thursday 10/22: Drink, dance, and feel smart at the Academy of Science’s weekly Nightlife event. This week, see artist Michael Bartalos talk about his work documenting the creation of sculptures made from Antarctic research facilities’ recyclables. 6-10pm, $12, 21+.
Stop by Space Gallery for an evening of reading and music hosted by Watchword Press. Author and Russian translator Matvei Yankelovich will be accompanied by the music of We Is Shore Dedicated, fronted by poet Sam Tsitrin. 1141 Polk St, 21+.
Friday 10/23: October is about more than jack-o-lanterns and trick-or-treating. It’s about boobs. As a part of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, 111 Minna is hosting Beats for Boobs, the 6th annual art and music fundraiser hosted by the SoMa gallery and bar. 6pm-2am, $20 donation, 21+.
Saturday 10/24: Join fellow misanthropic lovers of indie film (who may or may not reside in the Mission and eschew the term “hipster”) at the San Francisco Film Society’s screening of Sorry, Thanks at the Landmark Clay Theater as a part of the Cinema by the Bay festival. $12.50 gets you in to the 9PM showing of Dia Sokol’s hipster flick starring Wiley Wiggins of Dazed and Confused fame.
Sunday 10/25: Relive the summer of love (or just plain live it if you missed out on the first one) at West Fest, the 40th anniversary celebration of Woodstock at Golden Gate Park’s Speedway meadow. Put on your finest tie dye and see the likes of Jefferson Starship and Country Joe McDonald for free.
