This week in San Francisco, the annual Dia de los Muertos procession, get Mortified at The Makeout Room, the self-proclaimed “hardest working artist in San Francisco” will be showing at Fecal Face, and a whole lot more.
Monday 11/2: Celebrate the dead tonight by joining the annual Dia de los Muertos procession. Beginning at 24th and Bryant, and ending at the Festival of Altars in Garfield Park (26th and Harrison), this decades old San Francisco tradition honors the dead with food, music, celebration, and awesome costumes. 7pm, totally free.
Tuesday 11/3: Remember when you made that New Year’s resolution to immerse yourself in the art of toy modification? (Yeah, me neither!) Well, First Amendment Gallery’s got you covered. Show up tonight at 5.30pm for an introduction to toys for grown ups with artist Lily Black. $70/two classes, 1000 Howard St.
Wednesday 11/4: When was the last time you went to the zoo? Go today, and enjoy it for free! 10am-4pm, 1 Zoo Road, bring proof of San Francisco residency for free admission.
Thursday 11/5: As local art aficionados and budget conscious winos know too well, it’s First Thursday again! Get your art on this Thursday at Maxwell Loren Holyoke-Hirsch’s Megarealms opening. The self-proclaimed “hardest working artist in San Francisco,” who creates whimsical illustrations for the likes of the New York Times and Virgin Records, will be showing at Fecal Face’s gallery through the end of November. 6-9pm, 66 Gough St. @ Market. On a less recession-friendly, but equally awesome note, graphic novelist Ariel Schrag will be teaching a class at the Contemporary Jewish Museum. For $50, you too can learn how to artfully exercise your adolescent demons through the careful consideration of narrative options, style, and layout. 6pm, 736 Mission (between 3rd and 4th Streets).
Friday 11/6: If psychological purgatory and spiritual flux are your cup of tea, stop by the Yerba Buena Center for The Arts for Running Up That Hill, an evening of films by Shana Moulton, Ben Rivers, Jesse McLean, Tsuji Naoyuki, Phil Solomon, Ryan Trecartin and curator Michael Robinson. $6 for members, $10 for the rest of us, 7.30pm at 701 Mission St.
Saturday 11/7: Get Mortified at The Makeout Room where writers, comics, and plain old people volunteering to embarrass themselves publicly will read from their diaries about the horrors of adolescence in totally hilarious ways (if you need more convincing, check out the videos on their website, complete with “diorama-tizations”). See your own teenage musings in a new light and get inspired to finish that memoir you always knew you had in you. $12 advance tickets, $15 at the door, 21+, 3225 22nd St.
Sunday 11/8: Say goodbye to summer with the last Indie Mart of the season. Stop by Thee Parkside between noon and 6pm to stock up on handmade crafts, homemade treats, beer, corndogs, and holiday tchotchkes. 1600 17th St. @ Wisconsin.
