John Gall is the art director for Vintage and Anchor Books. He’s also the man behind the Nabokov Collection and the blog Spine Out. (Read two interviews with him: 1, 2.)

I want to thank him for sharing some of his collection of Japanese baseball cards. See more in the book he co-wrote, Sayonara Home Run!: The Art of the Japanese Baseball Card.

John explains that Japanese bromides “are essentially black-and-white or sepia-toned photographs that push the limits of information excess when they incorporate typography into the photo-printing process.” Read more about the cards (and see more images) in his AIGA article “Cut Through the Roaring Thunder with Your Swing!”
