This week in San Francisco: Meet Elphaba and Glinda for drinks, find out what the Sad Bastard Book Club sounds like, and get all eight days of your Hanukkah on at once.
Monday 12/7: Share a cookie with the cast of Wicked at the Hard Rock Cafe to raise funds for the Richmond Ermet Aids Foundation. The Wicked Holiday Cabaret offers both a pre-show dinner and after dinner dessert party for fans of the Tony award-winning Broadway show. 7.30 dinner/9.30 dessert, $25 each, Pier 39.
Tuesday 12/8: With so many cuddly winter holiday shenanigans going on these days, indulge your inner gutter punk for a change. Cradle a can of Hamm’s (the latter half of a beloved Knockout drink combo known as the Hamm Job) while you enjoy the musical stylings of The Nervous Tics at the Knockout. Free show, 21+, 3223 Mission St.
Okay, so the river of spectacular San Francisco events ran a little bit dry this Tuesday. Have an event you’d like to share with The Rumpus? Email me your links or drop me a tweet (web 2.0 phrases sound so dirty!) about your next art show, burlesque dance, menorah lighting, craft faire, book signing, etc. as long as it’s in San Francisco and open to the public, and it could appear here.
Wednesday 12/9: As we all know, the holidays are all about spending time with friends and family, giving to those less fortunate, and drinking with hot models. Do your part at this year’s annual SF Firefighter Toy Drive at Indulgence, the weekly party at Harry Denton’s Starlight Room Co-sponsored by JE Model. Bring an unwrapped toy and your best cocktail attired self for an evening of posh champagne sipping for a good cause. 8pm, $10 w/ toy, $15 w/out, 21+, 450 Powell St.
Thursday 12/10: Tonight, go to a book store, see a book club, and get absolutely no reading done. Hear Marc Manning, the Sad Bastard Book Club, Divisions, and Upward at the Adobe Books backroom gallery in the heart of the Mission. The performance (billed as an “emotionally experimental music show”) will take place in the book store’s gallery, which currently features the the solo exhibition and public debut of a recent book project by artist Toban Nichols. If you’re interested in Nichols’ work, which involves antiquated American social niceties and some serious use of the word “pussy”, his show, Opprobrium, opens officially on the 11th, from 7-9pm. 7pm, 3166 16th St. @ Guerrero.
Friday 12/11: Ditch big business and support local artists this holiday season. Bluxome Street Gallery has put together an impressive roster of talented artists for their Affortable Art Show. With pieces priced from $40-$200, you can get your art on and keep a roof over your head. 7-11pm, 63 Bluxome St.
Saturday 12/12: Get your menorah lit while perusing the Sendak exhibit and screening short films at The Hub’s Super 8 Hanukkah festival at the Contemporary Jewish Museum. The Maccabees may have had time for eight days of Hanukkah, but this year The Hub is cramming all eight days into one evening of DJs, art, poetry, and cocktails. 7-10pm, $10-$15, 736 Mission @ 3rd.
Sunday 12/13: Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past six weeks, you’re probably suffering from the same holiday consumer-itis the rest of us are. While completely boycotting gift-giving might not curry much favor for you this holiday season, Buying handmade at Bazaar Bizzare will. Plus, who knows, maybe it will inspire you to put a little love into that abandoned tea cozy you were knitting for your granny. Noon-6pm, $2 adult admission (half goes to charity), San Francisco County Fair Building, 1199 9th Ave.
