This week in San Francisco: SF MoMA wraps up a weekend of free art, local artist Eric Rewitzer offers his for an affordable price at Studio 3579, burlesque babes go roller derby at Dr. Sketchy’s, and the Torah goes web 2.0.
Monday 1/18: In case you didn’t make it over the weekend, head over to San Francisco’s Museum of Modern Art for the last day of their admission-free 75th anniversary weekend. Since you’re saving on admission, bring a donation of art supplies to bolster the impoverished art programs of San Francisco Public Schools. SF MoMA is located at 151 Third Street.
Tuesday 1/19: Short skirts, fishnets, and burlesque on wheels take over 111 Minna for the roller derby edition of Dr. Sketchy’s San Francisco Anti-Art School. $10 gets you in ($7 for students and teachers!) to an evening of sexy poses and saucy drawing contests, or just stop by for free to peruse the works of Sketch Tuesday artists. 21+, 7pm @ 111 Minna.
Wednesday 1/20: Let your perception of classical music be re-invented at the Sounding Off Tour’s stop at San Francisco’s SoCha Cafe. Pianist Phyllis Chen and cellist Johannes Moser are on a two week national tour to bring classical music to students and adults in a modern manner. SoCha Cafe will be hosting them as a part of their partnership with Classical Revolution. 8pm, $10 suggested donation, 3235 Mission Street (@ Valencia).
Thursday 1/21: Always supporting the local literary scene, the Mission’s own Adobe Books will be hosting authors Joanna Ruocco and Broc Rossel for an evening of reading. Ruocco will read from her first novel, “The Mothering Coven” and Rossel a selection of his nationally published poems. Free and open to the public, 7pm @ 3166 16th Street.
Friday 1/22: Party like it’s 1949 at the opening of the Noir City: Lust and Larceny. The Castro Theater film festival, which runs through the end of the month, kicks off with a double feature of Pitfall and Larceny in all of their 35mm glory. 7.30pm, $10, 429 Castro St.
Saturday 1/23: Stop by Studio 3579 for the opening reception of Eric Rewitzer’s latest show: Brush and Blade. Rewitzer, also a relief sculptor, shares 3 Fish Studios with his wife, artist Annie Galvin, where they hold workshops and share their affordable artwork with the world. 6-9pm, 499 Dolores (@ 18th Street).
Sunday 1/24: What do you get when you combine art, technology, and the Five Books of Moses? From Verse to Universe: Reading The People’s Torah. At 2pm, artists Hillary Leone and Mirek Nisenbaum will discuss the project that aims to create a three dimensional virtual collaboration of the Torah by over 300,000 global participants. Free with museum admission ($10 general/$8 students and seniors/children under 18 free) @ The Contemporary Jewish Museum, 736 Mission Street.
