For one night next week, March 4, in support of literature, the arts and Canteen’s writing program for Harlem youth, Arnold Lehman and his wife Pam Lehman will open their Brooklyn Heights home for an intimate evening: Canteen Magazine’s Second Annual Benefit Gala.
Lehman, the risk-taking Director of the Brooklyn Museum who famously battled former mayor Rudolph Giuliani in defense of the First Amendment, joins the editors of Canteen and its host committee to invite you to do some or all of the following:
Have your literary fortunes read by hot young authors Porochista Khakpour, author of Sons and Other Flammable Objects (she’s also on the cover of this month’s Poets & Writers), and Justin Taylor, author of Everything Here is the Best Thing Ever;
Sample exquisite treats by Michelin-starred chef Kurt Gutenbrunner, learn expert cocktail tricks by Brian Van Flandern–mixologist at Per Se, and bid on discounted art donated by Canteen contributing artists all while surrounded by the Lehman’s personal art collection; and
Listen to Gina Gionfriddo, Obie award winning playwright and author of Pulitzer Prize nominated play Becky Shaw, talk about how education makes the artist.

This is an event you will enjoy while you’re there and think about again and again after you leave. Tickets start at $75 for the “Gifted.” But, that’s a deal. “Mad Geniuses” must pay $1000. Get tickets here before they’re gone. It is a private home after all, and there’s only so many people a private home can hold. Because Canteen is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, all tickets are fully tax-deductible.
