This week, learn about Asian culture at Sandra Lee Gallery’s acclaimed Chinese New Year show and Robin Sukhadia’s Understanding Bollywood workshop series, get your post Noise Pop film fix at the Disposable Film Festival, and stop by Babylon Salon’s Spring reading with a performance by the first ever twitter released novelist.
Monday 3/1: In honor of Chinese New Year, Sandra Lee Gallery hosted February’s 8 Figurative Artists from China. Due to popular demand, the show has been extended through March. Curator, Sandra Lee, has specifically chosen contentemporary pieces that never would have survived in the harsh political climate of pre-1989 China to exemplify the exchange of artistic ideals between modern China and the west. Open until 6pm, 251 Post Street.
Tuesday 3/2: Learn something new every Tuesday this month at Robin Sukhadia’s Understanding Bollywood Through Music lecture series at the Kearny Street Workshop. Through readings, film screenings, and field trips, Sukhdia will deconstruct the meaning of Bollywood music in films from the 1930’s to present day. $150-$180 for 6 classes, Tuesdays 7-9pm @ 1436 Howard Street.
Wednesday 3/3: See the eerie subconscious of artist Philip Buller through his oil paintings at the opening reception of his latest show, Vulnerability, at Andrea Schwartz Gallery. 5:30-7:30pm @ 525 2nd Street.
Thursday 3/4: Head down to the Roxie for the Disposable Film Festival’s Competetive Shorts Program. Chosen from over 1,000 international submissions, the evening represents some of the best short films of the year and is followed up by a rocking after party at Dalva. Buy tickets ahead of time as the single showing will likely sell out. $12, 8pm @ 3117 16th Street.
Friday 3/5: Spend the evening at the Verdi Club for Southern Exposure’s 10th Annual Monster Drawing Rally. Not actually a rally for drawing monsters, Southern Exposure organizes shifts of 30 artists who work for an hour at a time to create live art pieces sold for $60. Proceeds benefit SoEx’s exhibitions and Artist Education programs, and there will be a bicycle valet and street side tacos, for the discerning hipster. 21+, $10+ donation, 6-11pm @ 2424 Mariposa Street.
Feeling literary instead? Head down to Benders where Mother Jones editor, Mac McClelland, will be reading from her new book, For Us Surrender Is Out Of The Question. Plus, what tale of war-torn Burma would be complete without food and music? Sausages and karaoke will abound at the evening reading. 21+, 7:30pm @ 806 South Van Ness.
Saturday 3/6: Celebrate spring at Babylon Salon’s Spring Reading with Peter Orner, Toni Mirosevich, and Kemble Scott. Also on the bill is Instant City editor, Gravity Goldberg, who will be introducing Matt Stewart, whose debut novel was released via Twitter. 7pm @ 580 Sutter Street.
