Yesterday Salon announced a new partnership with McSweeney’s, stating that the online magazine will be “frequently running pieces and excerpts from the various McSweeney’s divisions — McSweeney’s Quarterly Journal, The Believer, Wholphin and McSweeney’s Books — exclusively on Salon.com.”
That’s great news for Salon, as they will get some strong content from McSweeney’s, but what’s in it for the San Francisco based publishing house? We contacted Publisher Chris Ying, who had this to say:
“We’re really excited about our partnership with Salon and the opportunity to put our writers in front of different audiences. The exchange with Salon isn’t a monetary one, though. We give content to Salon, and in turn, they run it, along with ads for the publications in which the content originally appeared. So basically, we get to share Elif Batuman’s hilarious rundown of never-produced films with more people, and readers of Salon are introduced to The Believer. That’s our takeaway.”
Salon readers get new and unique material, while McSweeney’s finds a larger audience for their articles, movies, and books. Sounds like a win win.
