This week in San Francisco: Lilith Fair is back with a vengeance, Damn Handsome & The Birthday Suits frontman and excellent author, Joshua Mohr, reads from his latest book at City Lights, and Elissa Bassist hosts her last San Francisco Literary Death Match at the Elbo Room!
Monday 7/5: Slip your favorite Birkenstocks on and party like it’s 1999 at the first Lilith Fair in over a decade! Sarah McLachlan and co. return for an estrogen-powered evening at Mountain View’s Shoreline Amphitheater. The show goes on all evening @ Shoreline.
Tuesday 7/6: Experience San Francisco’s literary scene at its truest at City Lights for Joshua Mohr’s reading from his latest novel, Termite Parade. Mohr’s previous novel, Some Things That Meant the World to Me, was both an O, The Oprah Magazine book pick and has been compared to the writing of Bukowski. After the reading, keep the literary shenanigans going with a drink next door at Vesuvio, the infamous haunt of beatnicks like Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and Lawrence Ferlinghetti. 7pm @ 261 Columbus Avenue.
Wednesday 7/7: Sip Artesa wine and see the works of a dozen artists in Gallery 28’s annual group exhibition/competition. 6pm @ 1228 Grant Avenue.
Thursday 7/8: Keep building that art-cred at the opening reception of Totally Unrealistic: The Art of Abstraction at SOMArts. See sculptural works by Cecil C. Childress, Ralph Joachim, and Marilyn Kuksht curated by Kuksht. 6pm @ 934 Brannan Street.
Friday 7/9: Get yourself to the Elbo Room for episode 31 of Literary Death Match! Co-hosted by Janine Brito, this will be producer Elissa Bassist’s final show in San Francisco! This time around, see memoirist Andre Perry, BROWNSTAR duo Pushkar Sharma and Sathya Sridharan, poet Andrew Nelson, and spoken-word artist Kirya Traber. The readers will be judged by illustrator/author Lisa Brown, former LDM champion Beth Spotswood, and performance artist Ben McCoy. Tickets $6-10, 21+, 6:30pm @ 647 Valencia Street.
Saturday 7/10: Get another dose of Janine Brito as she opens for W. Kamau Bell at Stagewerx. Kamau will be doing a special going-away show after the LOL-SF festivities before taking off to Montreal for the Just For Laughs festival. $10 cheap! 8pm @ 533 Sutter Street.
Sunday 7/11: Remember back in March of this year when I told you all how great Grand Hallway is? Of course you do. Catch Tomo and the band live with The Moanin’ Dove as they open for Birds&Batteries at Café Du Nord. Tickets $10-12, 21+, 8pm @ 2174 Market Street.
