Monday 8/2: Relatively new, and already so popular that it has outgrown its original venue, this month’s Quiet Lightning reading series moves to the Rickshaw Stop! Stop by to submit, or just to spectate, and pick up a copy of the latest sPARKLE & bLINK Quiet Lighting anthology while you’re there. 18+, $3 at the door, 7pm @ 155 Fell Street.
Tuesday 8/3: It’s First Tuesday, which means free museum admission all across the city, leaving you absolutely no excuse not to go and get cultured! At the intersection of traditional art and modern design is Yerba Buena Center for the Arts’ TechnoCraft, an exhibit that showcases everything from customizable design platforms to the nerdiest of hacks. Stop by between 6 and 8pm for YBCA’s Art Tap happy hour @ 701 Mission Street.
Wednesday 8/4: Independent Televisions Services and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting take over the main library’s Koret Auditorium for a women’s empowerment screening series. Four different films show throughout the afternoon. Free, 3:30-6:30pm @ 100 Larkin Street.
Thursday 8/5: Support independent bookstores and storytelling of all sorts at Booksmith with John Biewen and the Kitchen Sisters’ discussion of Reality Radio, an anthology of collected works by some of the best writers on the airwaves including Biewen, Ira Glass, The Kitchen Sisters, and The Rumpus’ own Rick Moody. 7:30pm @ 1644 Haight Street.
Friday 8/6: Cheat on your neighborhood with the Lower Haight tonight at the Lower Haight Summer Art Walk. As usual, stroll the street for special deals at LH retailers, live music, outdoor art, and food cart cuisine. Less-than-as-usual, this Art Walk also boasts a scavenger hunt, sponsored by Lower Haters, with a $100 cash prize (that’s, like, a couple dozen gourmet cupcakes from the KaraVan with funds to spare for all sorts of other edibles…) Free and all ages, 7-10pm on the 400-700 blocks of Haight Street.
Saturday 8/7: Toys meet art in North Beach at Double Punch’s latest art opening. Look Alive features graphic new work by Michael Sieben, Deth P. Sun, Jon Vermilyea, and Parskid. Stop by and meet the artists at the gallery opening upstairs, and wander through collectible heaven in the downstairs store. 7-11pm @ 1821 Powell Street.
Sunday 8/8: Relive your college dreams of becoming an artist at Big Umbrella’s August Open Studio. Bring your own unfinished projects and supplies, or use the studio’s offerings to create your masterpiece (just make sure to donate for the supplies you’ve used). Free and all ages, 3:30-7pm @ 906 1/2 Divisadero Street.
