The Surf Guru Reviewed in the NYT Book Review

Yesterday I opened my Sunday Times Book Review to find that the Rumpus Book Club pick has once more been reviewed by the New York Times. Obviously the folks at the New York Times are reading the Rumpus.

I think it’s nutty that this reviewer did not think the characters in “Dinaburg’s Cake” were believable. I think the general consensus during the chat was that both Kacy and April’s characters reminded us of some obscure person we have encountered at some point in our lives. In my opinion, the part where Kacy masturbates to the image of Dinaburg symbolized her intent of conquer; fulfilling her goal of having him want her again. Kacy is obviously a woman of insecurity and various neuroses. She became so obsessed about it, she took a slice of that lady’s cake just to reassure herself of her self worth. As for the fact that she only suggested hats for her daughter? I think that that was her insecurity again– in an attempt to sugar-coat the situation at hand, she (as a mother) needed to provide a solution (hats) instead of rationally realizing that the solution was only temporary. If the bald spots were covered up, she wouldn’t have to worry about it. The problem would be masked and eventually, to her, it would just go away.
