Here’s an article in the LA Times about the revival of the cassette tape. Seems as though cassettes are the new vinyl. Or something. Apparently, the fuss-free cheapness of the cassette as a recording medium is being re-explored by small record companies, DJ’s and other lifeblood luminaries of the grass roots music industry. Of course, that was always the cassette tape’s selling point: easy home recording, pirating your mates’ vinyl and making personalised mix tapes. Ah yes, the mix tape gets an honorary mention here. If you’re tempted to poo poo the ‘return’ of the music cassette, check out this lengthy and enjoyable article that’s about more than nostalgia, it’s about the cassette as creative medium. (Also see this Boston Globe article on the same subject.)
