This week, The Monthly Rumpus, Nerd Nite, the first episode of Literary Death Match with new producer, m.g. Martin, Ferris Plock’s latest solo show, and a pretty sweet looking lineup at Outside Lands.
Monday 8/9: Hot Nights, the August Monthly Rumpus, is here already. As usual: it’s $10 cheap, happening at the Makeout Room, hosted by Stephen Elliott, and full of the now-infamous empanadas and porn. On the program this month: readings by Antonia Crane, Matthew Zapruder, and Steve Almond, comedy by Nato Green, and music by the legendary Chuck Prophet. 21+, 7pm @ 3225 22nd Street.
Tuesday 8/10: Give the tacos a break this Tuesday and head down to Maritime Plaza with your team of choice for the Mastermind Pub Hunt. $10, 6pm, quite clearly 21+ only.
Wednesday 8/11: “Like the Discovery Channel…with beer”, it’s Nerd Nite at the Rickshaw Stop! This time around, history buff Laureano Faedi presents Tales of Old San Francisco, synthetic biologist Felix Moser talks about Biofuel, Medicine, and Colored Poo, and physiology professor Dani Behonick, Ph.D makes you feel better about you last one night stand with The Worst Case Scenario Guide to Sex. $8, all ages, 7:30pm @ 155 Fell Street.
Thursday 8/12: Not in San Francisco, but just across the bridge, this month’s Why There Are Words reading series revolves around the theme of weather. See readings by Rosaleen Bertolino, Josie Brown, Matty Byloo, Jeff Gillenkirk, Margaret Kaufman, and Townsend Walker. $5, 7pm @ Studio 333 (333 Caledonia Street, Sausalito).
Friday 8/13: While Funny Women Editor and Literary Death Match SF Producer, Elissa Bassist, will be missed by lit-fans all over the Bay Area, the show must go on! LDM Episode 32 is here with a brand new host, m.g. Martin, four new contestants, and three new judges! This month, award-winning poet D.A. Powell, Jamey Genna, Tanya Egan Gibson, and “Twit-lit” master Matt Stewart compete for the good graces of K.M. Soehnlein (The World of Normal Boys and Robin and Ruby), Russell Blackwood (Pearls Over Shanghai, Shocktoberfest), and Tony DuShane (author of I Was a Teenage Jesus Jerk and host of Drinks with Tony). Squirt guns may make an appearance, regardless of which, hilarity is sure to ensue. 21+, tickets $7-10, 6:30-9pm @ 647 Valencia Street.
Saturday 8/14: Get to the Shooting Gallery for the opening reception of Ferris Plock’s solo show, Rest For The Wicked. If you’re unfamiliar with Plock’s signature style, you either haven’t lived in San Francisco long, or else you’ve been hiding under a rock. Be sure to check out the self-taught artist’s newest works as well as some of the sweet collaborations he has done with wife, Kelly Tunstall. 7-11pm @ 839 Larkin Street.
Sunday 8/15: It’s no Bumbershoot, Bonaroo, or SXSW yet, but make the trek to Speedway Meadows this weekend so that you may someday tell people about how you were at Outside Lands back when it all started. The third annual festival of fog and sound boasts a line up including Mayer Hawthorne, Al Green (Holy slow jams, Batman!), Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes, Social D (I know, right?), and all those indie darlings like Phoenix, Kings of Leon, and Empire of the Sun. Noon-9pm, tickets $75+
