WEDNESDAY 9/1: Karen Hayes and Victoria Bruce discuss Hostage Nation: Colombia’s Guerrilla Army and the Failed War on Drugs. The journalists provide readers with insight and access to information on the topic they won’t read anywhere else. Barnes and Noble, 82nd St and Broadway. 7PM. Free.
THURSDAY 9/2: Incredible pianist Ian Hobson dedicates his concert to the works of Chopin and Schumann. Tonight he plans on playing the collections from said pianists as well as Albéniz, Fauré, Szymanowski, Scriabin. Dicapo Opera Theatre. 8PM. $30.
FRIDAY 9/3: Brooklyn Botanic Gardens celebrates 100 years with a plethora of stories and memories being shared by volunteers and longtime staff members. Join in the celebration by enjoying stories, photographs, and artifacts in the Steinhardt Conservatory Gallery. Brooklyn Botanic Gardens. 8am-6pm. $8.
Razor Boy Music presents Bitter End Concert Series featuring the fusion band Stephanie White and the Philth Harmonic. The Bitter End. 8:30PM. $10.
SATURDAY 9/4: If you love playing dress up, then I have just the Saturday venture for you. Coney Island hosts Rockabilly Festival, hosted by Cockabilly Records. Sideshow acts, burlesque dancers, and of course live rockabilly music make for the perfect dance induced Saturday. Coney Island. All day. Free.
SATURDAY MOVIE PICK: The Winning Season
Dead beat dad Bill, played by the never disappointing Sam Rockwell, takes on the role of coaching his daughter’s high school basketball team. The six girls struggle to the finish line, each with a unique story of their own, varying from dating an older shoe salesman (Rooney Mara) to Tamra discovering her attraction to females when a member of the opposing team (Caitlin Colford – yes that’s right, The Rumpus’s own) flirts her way to the rim.
SUNDAY9/5: Celebrate Labor Day with the Electric Zoo on Randalls Island. Superstars take the stage while electronic music blasts throughout the island. Moby will be DJaying on the main stage. 70+ artists will be performing Saturday and Sunday. Randalls Island. 11AM-11PM. $96 for a general admission ticket, two day passes are also available.
ART: The Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit
Washington Square celebrates art with various artist’s setting up watercolors, sculptures, photography, jewelry and ceramics, amongst others. Come out to see fresh new talent and perhaps purchase and original that will be worth millions in the next century (Jackson Pollock once sold his art in Washington Square Park).
