1. Sometimes, at the top of this site, it says “you don’t co-op pop culture, pop culture co-ops you.” A good musician friend of mine named Adam Balbo likes to say that Michael Jackson lyrics and He-Man toys are the shared cultural mythology we have to draw from.
I’m not here to pick sides.
2. Back in April I was in London visiting an ex-sort-of-girlfriend. We walked around Picadilly Circus (which is a terrible place to try and meet someone) where she had just gotten off work and walked through some backstreets to a pub. We hadn’t seen eachother in over three years and it was interesting to remember why I was attracted to her without feeling any urge or need to try again. I commented on how cool a jar of colorful candy in a shoppe window looked. She laughed at how in character it was that the first thing I’d remarked on was the twee-est thing we’d come across.
3. As I write this it is the first day of September. At Walgreens today I noticed a full section of Halloween candy. Songs about how great it is to be in love in the summertime have started feeling increasingly nostolgic and melancholy.
4. Allo Darlin’ (with self-titled debut album 2010 Fortune Pop Records) boast members from the UK and Australia who’ve played in twee hall of fame bands like Tender Trap and Hexicon. They play songs about cooking chili, Woody Allen films, the end of Polaroid, and both sweetly mutual and unrequited love. Sometimes they briefly break into covers of Weezer songs. It is exactly the kind of music that should annoy, but sometimes it is ok to be way too cloying.
