This week in New York Mayhem launches, Darin Strauss lives Half a Life, Nick Flynn knows The Art of Losing, RISK! is dreamy, The New Yorker Festival screens our MOVIE PICK The Social Network, and in ART, Rob Pruitt returns.

Tuesday 9/28: Founded by writers Dale Peck, Lisa Dierbeck, D. W. Gibson, and Joshua Furst and the blogger Choire Sicha, literary friends and a burlesque dancer dressed in book pages celebrate the launch of Mischief + Mayhem, an exciting new venture in online publishing. Room Service. 6:30PM. Free.

Wednesday 9/29: Darin Strauss reads from Half a Life, published by McSweeny’s and recently given praise by the NYTimes Book ReviewHalf a Life recounts Strauss’s shaky memory of having struck a girl with his car in his teens, leading to her death. McNally Jackson. 7PM. Free.

Thursday 9/30: RISK! is back with a new season, this round of guests include Joe Mande (Look at This Fucking Hipster), Emily Gould (Gawker), Kurt Braunohler, Matt Higgins, Cammi Climaco (Ask Me). The hilarious team of storytellers will weigh in with personal tales with the theme of “Dreams.” 92YTribeca. 7PM. $15.

Friday 10/1: The New Yorker Festival presents this week’s MOVIE PICK. The Social Network kicks off the festival followed by a Q+A with its stars Jesse Eisenberg, Justin Timberlake, and the film’s screenwriter Aaron Sorkin. Five star buzz is swarming this film and I’m sure Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s recent $110million dollar donation to Newark’s public school system won’t hurt it’s box office revenue. Director’s Guild Theater. 6PM. $30.

Saturday 10/2: Nick Flynn, Marie Howe + Kevin Young (editor) read from their work and discuss The Art of Losing: Poems of Grief and Healing. Poets House. 1PM. Free.

ART: Rob Pruitt at GBE and Maccarone

Never afraid to give art admirers a true visual experience, Rob Pruitt shows at both GBE (Gavin Brown’s Enterprise) and Maccarone, through Oct 23. P.S. The panda is back.
