This week: How Language Shapes Thought, the final Kaliedoscope Reading Series of the year, Muni Diaries Live! at the Makeout Room, and San Francisco’s favorite holiday (after Folsom Street Fair and LoveFest) — Halloween!
Monday 10/25: While The Rumpus’ book club is an international endeavor, our monthly In-Person Discussions at the infamous Booksmith give Bay Area book club members (and prospective bibliophiles) a chance for some real live social interaction. This month: Adam Levin’s The Instructions. 7:30pm @ 1644 Haight Street.
Tuesday 10/26: When given a set of images showing the passing of time, English speakers will arrange the images from left to right; Speakers of Hebrew will arrange them from right to left; And no matter where the experiment is conducted, speakers of certain Australian aboriginal languages arrange the images from East to West, in orientation the daylight path of the sun across the sky. Join Stanford cognitive linguist Lera Boroditsky for one in a series of The Seminars About Long-term Thinking: How Language Shapes Thought. Tickets $10, 7:30pm @ the Cowell Theater, Fort Mason Center.
Wednesday 10/27: Unscripted storytelling takes over the Jellyfish Gallery for their monthly Fireside Reading. This month, a BYOB Halloween inspired debauchery takes place with stories by Joe Klocek, Laura Bess, Phil Ohst, Damien Chacona, and Tim Pratt. $5, 7:30pm @ 1286 Folsom Street.
Thursday 10/28: The final Kaleidoscope Reading Series of the year is here with poetry by Sarah Fran Wisby, Vickie Vertiz, Meg Day, Allison Towata and Melanie Hilario Sattin. 8pm @ 3109 24th Street.
Friday 10/29: Commiserate with fellow Muni riders Derek Powazek (Fray Magazine), Bucky Sinister, and The Rumpus’ own Isaac Fitzgerald at the twice-yearly Muni Diaries Live! reading at the Makeout Room. Have a few drinks, join the Fastpass/Clipper debate, and get up on stage to share your personal public transportation woes for a chance to win prizes. $5, 21+, 7:30pm @ 3225 22nd Street.
Saturday 10/30: Whether you’re a fan of the Stewart/Colbert platform, or just out to see some television personalities break political ground with the most absurdly named movement since the term “teabagger” entered the political lexicon, the Rally To Restore Sanity/March To Keep Fear Alive is surely not to be missed. For those that couldn’t make it to Washington, D.C., San Francisco will be one of nearly 1000 cities to heed the “call to reasonable-ness” with a rally at Civic Center. 9am-3pm @ Civic Center.
Sunday 10/31: Don’t you already have plans? It’s Halloween! Dress up as something you’re not and go forth into the drunken night to combat the hoards of people dressed as slutty-fill-in-the-blanks. Just watch your candy corn consumption — the Monday morning high fructose corn syrup withdraws are killer.
