“Nearly 2,000 volunteers lined up on the Akoni Pule Highway on Saturday to form a human chain, so they could pass the thousands of books – or huki puke, in Hawaiian – over a mile and a third down the road to the new library.”
I know we’ve all read articles about the state of the public library, from closings to decreased hours to lack of funding, but this story from Hawaii is a little ray of sunshine to melt the despair.
One-third of the total population of North Kohala got a little exercise when they transported thousands of books hand-to-hand from the old library to its new home a little over a mile away.
I have to admit that the first thought that popped into my mind while watching the video was that this event provided the perfect opportunity for those with overdue books to sneak them back into the library without paying a fine.
Who do I contact at my local library to arrange a huki puke? I have a copy of Chocolat to sneak in. (via Maud Newton)
