As a former prostitute, I am very concerned that the Rumpus is linking to the donation portal of an organization called Sex Workers Outreach Project.
The founder and leader of the SWOP Robyn Few was convicted of promoting prostitution. This means she was a Madam, profiting off the exploitation of vulnerable young women. Prostitution is not a victimless crime.
I don’t think this was intentional on the part of the Rumpus, but I think it’s really terrible to be linking to the donation portal of this organization, which is not even a nonprofit.
One of the hardest things about finding a way to help prostitutes is that the organization pretending to help them are usually run for the benefit of those that enslave and exploit them. This is one such example.
Please post an official link to Restore NYC as an option for donations in recognition of a Day in Remembrance of Violence Against Sex Workers. It’s even worse than it seems, because prostitutes are usually so terrorized and isolated that it takes all the strength and courage to go somewhere for help. If they get to an organization, and they meet a Madam trying to recruit them, they likely will never reach out for help again.
