Saddest Books in the World

GalleyCat is asking readers to name the saddest books in the world.

The saddest books I’ve read are so far are Bridge to Terabithia, Fall on Your Knees, The Lovely Bones, and A Thousand Splendid Suns. I’ve read more, but these books made me sob. I borrowed one of the books and had to explain to my friend the reason behind the water-damaged pages.

For those of us in one of the many states being battered by Mother Nature, ‘tis the season to be SAD, so if you need a good cry because you’re stuck in the house and yet another snowstorm is on its way; pick up one of these books and cry your heart out. That’s what I plan to do, though I need some new recommendations. What is the saddest book you’ve ever read?

If you’re on Twitter, you can share your saddest book picks with the hashtag #saddestbooks (started by Emily Wolchko).

  1. The Leopard by G. Tomasi de Lampedusa is the saddest book ever. People who are caught in their social class unable to adapt are so sad.

  2. Stoner, by John Williams, is the saddest book I’ve ever read.

  3. The Road, Cormac McCarthy

The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter is unspeakably, bitterly, and beautifully sad. Carson McCullers knew despair and heartbreak like no one else.

  5. Kazuo Ishiguro, Never Let Me Go.

@GFC: I always felt like The Road ended on a note of hope and redemption.

  6. It’s an interesting topic, because I have never cried while reading a book. I have wrote on the subject before if anybody is interested:

  7. Away by Amy Bloom. And when I was in 7th grade, Gone with the Wind.

Personally, I think ‘Thirteen Reasons Why’. Oh dear lord, that made me cry..
