This week in San Francisco, Daniel Orozco visits the Booksmith, SFSmiles throws a party for dads and Hard French parties for Pride.
Monday, June 20th – Author Daniel Orozco is gracing San Francisco with his presence, and we are ecstatic to have him. Go and hear him read at The Booksmith today or you may be let go. Here’s his, probably, most well-known short story: Orientation. Read it all the way through, or you may be let go. The Booksmith, 7:30pm, Free – Deets.
Tuesday, June 21st – Today is the summer solstice and all the spiritual, hippy, healing stone, karmic crazies are crawling out of the woodwork to jump and dance and freak out. Join them at Ocean Beach this evening to welcome the longest day of the year. Ocean Beach, 7:30pm, Free. For more info, email [email protected].
Wednesday, June 22nd – It’s hard not to hate someone who went to Harvard, has a NY Times columnist dad and was the youngest writer ever on SNL, but it’s easier when they’re brilliant. Here, read THIS (boy meets girl, girl creates contract, boy gets traded) and then go to this: Simon Rich in Opera Plaza. Books, Inc., 7:30pm, Free.
Thursday, June 23rd – In honor of Pride, Manic D Press presents poet Daphne Gottlieb, Larry Bob-Roberts (dubbed the Stephen Colbert of queer culture), punk icon Lynn Breedlove and Alvin Orloff for an evening of literary indulgence. Modern Times, 7pm, Free – Info.
Friday, June 24th – I’ve talked a little about SFSmiles before – they are a charity for charities; collecting stuff, all kinds of stuff, to redistribute to specific charities. This Friday they are throwing a “Dad” themed party – “Papa Daddy Pop” – with music by Allison Lovejoy, Ms. Momo and Jeff Desira with a spoken word performance by Ron Jones. They ask that you bring men’s clothing to be donated to St. Anthony’s Dolores Street Community Services and Wardrobe for Opportunity. Get down and give a lot. St. Aiden’s Episcopal Church, 7pm, $10-20 sliding scale – Info.
Saturday, June 25th – Today and tomorrow the 35th Annual SF Free Folk Festival takes place at Presidio Middle School. Two full days of music and dance workshops, concerts, dance parties, crafts, vendors, formal and informal music making, and just plain fun for the whole family. This festival hosts over 25 musical acts and tons of fun activities and workshops. Get out there, get down with the folky Franciscans. Presidio Middle School, Free – Info.
This weekend is also Pride. You know what to do (boas, heels, glitter, go!).
Sunday, June 26th – Hard French is proud to be hosting yet another Pride Party, this year at Public Works. They have this party stacked, and I mean, stacked, with tons of DJs, live acts, drag shows and fierce pride. “Hard Dancing. Hard Cruising. Hard Homos. Hard Pride.” Public Works, 2pm, $10-15 – Info.
