This week in San Francisco, it’s the first week of the month, so that means a lot of (free!?!!) stuff to get to. It’s also August, so here’s to some sunnier days (please?!?) to do all this stuff in.
Monday August 1– Maria Bamford self-deprecates till you feel it yourself, keeps it smart, and won’t give in to a cheap laugh. Punchline Club, 8pm.
Tuesday August 2-Two local acts and one import from Jersey work their sounds into an indie-pop triumvirate of wistfulness for the summer we don’t always get in SF. Real Estate, Dominant Legs and Melted Toys play the Independent at 8pm. Doors open at 7:30; $15. Also Tuesday-cheap tacos, cheap yoga, cheap drinks and freedom to sing badly.
Wednesday August 3- LitUp Writers is a collective that gives the stage to the humorous writers among us. Get down with them on 8/3 for Habitat for Insanity: Stories of the City, an evening of writers reading personal experiences of bad housing, missed connections, and urban chaos. Laugh, commiserate, and get tipsy at Mina’s full bar. The event is free (21+). 111 Minna Gallery 7-10 pm.
Thursday August 4-Take it easy at home for a night with the extremely awesome ITVS and its free online indie showcase. This week the series features the English Surgeon. Soundtrack by Nick Cave. Before that though, get in on the Chronicle Books Summer Warehouse Sale, where tons of local titles will be up for 65% off. 9am-7pm
Saturday August 6–Writers with Drinks is back this week with memoirs and biographies and science fiction and so much more that I won’t list it lest your brain explode in anticipation. Melissa Febos, former dominatrix and author of Whip Smart, will be on hand, along with Hugo and Nebula Award winner Ted Chiang and Lee Konstantinou, editor of a forthcoming book of essays on David Foster Wallace. As usual, expect some some stand-up, poetry, and other things naturally occurring as lit types drink together in a place called the Make-Out Room. 7:30-9:30; 5-10 bucks, sliding scale.
