The Edgar Allan Poe home in Baltimore is, unfortunately, lacking the financial means to stay afloat. Poe lived there in his last years of life, and Baltimore is of major site-specific importance to his writerly development. Thus, this city landmark needs more visitors, or perhaps a generous Poe-philic benefactor to stay open.
“Because of who Poe was, and what he wrote about, his lingering presence seems stronger in this house than, say, somewhere where George Washington once slept. Writers like Stephen King come to visit. Visitors try to spook one another. People often ask whether the house is haunted.”
