MONDAY 8/29: louderARTS presents a Post-Irene Open Slam featuring poet Seth Walker. Sign up at 7 for the open mic and slam, show at 7:30. 2 for 1 drinks all night. Bar 13. $6, $5 students.
TUESDAY 8/30: Word for Word Poetry presents poets E.J. Antonio, Michael Cirelli, Marie-Elizabeth Mali, and Patricia Spears Jones. Bryant Park Reading Room. (Rain Location: The General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen at 20 West 44th Street.) 7 p.m. Free.
WEDNESDAY 8/31: The Believer magazine is celebrating this year’s music issue with music and conversation with contemporary composers. Performances from Nadia Sirota, Ted Hearne and Philip White, Jozef Van Wissem, Jacob Cooper, Tristan Perich, William Britelle. Hosted by The Believer’s interviews editor Ross Simonini and a conversation with contributing editor Brandon Stosuy, editor at Pitchfork. Public Assembly. 8 p.m. $10, 18+ Admission gets you a free copy of the music issue and proceeds benefit 826NYC, a non- profit writing lab and tutoring center for kids aged 6-18.
THURSDAY 9/01: Syfy Movies with a View at Brooklyn Bridge Park presents viewers choice. Tonight’s movie will be decided by public vote. DJs from Brooklyn Radio will kick off the evening and a bike valet will be provided by Transportation Alternatives, sponsored by Bike and Roll. Music at 6 p.m., movies at sunset. Free.
FRIDAY 9/02: The Faux-Real Theatre Company presents Seven Against Thebes by Aeschylus, a play that begins with the city of Thebes preparing for an invasion led by seven warriors as their leader Eteocles tries to silence the protests of the city’s women. Faux-Real presents this Greek classic with an all-female cast of twelve. East River Park. 8 p.m. Free.
SATURDAY 9/03: MoMA PS1 presents Warm Up, its outdoor series that introduces audiences to the best in experimental live music, sound, performance, and DJs. Today will feature Horse Meat Disco, Midnight Magic, Justin Miller, and BICEP. 2 p.m. $15 for adults; free for MoMA members and Long Island City Residents.
SUNDAY 9/04: Author Anne Elizabeth Moore will read from Cambodian Grrl: Self-Publishing in Phnom Penh, which is part memoir, part investigative journalism on teaching publishing to impoverished women in Cambodian provinces. Bluestockings. 7 p.m. Free.
