This week, come check out the Occupy SF Art and Performance Series, with local awesomes like Michelle Tea, Nato Green, Kamau Bell, Heklina, Literary Death Match’s Alia Volz, and more
A few days ago, Hiya Swanhuyser and I ran into each other as we were checking out Occupy SF in front of the Federal Reserve downtown. What we saw down there was exciting, no doubt, but a little underwhelming. The Mayor seems to be screwing with the occupation on every technicality he can, and many I’ve talked to don’t seem as excited about this particular occupation as they do the ones in New York and LA and Chicago. Maybe because of our history of ridiculous protests (if I never see a puppet again at a protest, it will be too soon), there seems to be a lot more eye-rolling going on than in other places.
I can’t tell you how many people have said, “Isn’t it just the crusty kids from Haight Street?”
Well, it’s not. True, they’re there, but there’s lots of other people, too. And even the kids from Haight Street are surprisingly organized, nice, unusually sober and eager for more to join them.
Of course it’s true that it could be more awesome. It could be more awesome if there were more awesome people there. So a bunch of us artists started this to bring out more awesome people. I mean, if New York has Jeff Mangum and LA has Tom Morello, where are San Francisco’s artists?
Enter the OccupySF Art and Performance Series. We’ll be bringing artists by all week, from Monday to Friday. We’re getting more artists all the time. Come check it out. It will be awesome.
