Monday 10/31: Freak yourself out on fun all day: ghost hunter Jeff Dwyer reads from – and guides a tour of – A Ghost Hunter’s Guide to the SF Bay Area. SOMA’s cocktail crawl starts at 5:30, for $5. NOPA has a PG costume contest at 5:30. Balkan brass and New Orleans funk wraps up the night at the Bottom of the Hill‘s Extra Action Marching Band Halloween Party. 8:30PM $5. Tuesday 11/1: Authors Gerald Nicosia and Anne Marie Santos are at City Lights for the release of One and Only: The Untold Story of On The Road, a look into the life of Lu An Henderson, her relationships with both Jack Kerouac and Neal Cassady, and her part in enabling the beat generation. 7PM FREE.
Wednesday 11/2: Writer and feminist Isabel Allende discusses “What Women Really Want” as part of the Wise Talk series featuring “women of wit speaking the voice of the feminine, exploring the paradigms of spiritual traditions and science, and empowering the principles of leadership from the heart.” $15 7PM. In the Mission, 2011’s Dia de los Muertos procession begins at 7PM at 22nd and Bryant.
Thursday 11/3: Green Apple Books is hosting Granta Magazine‘s release of its “Issue 117: Horror,” full of new writing that “examines not just the horrors that go bump in the night, but those that lurk in the every day” as well. Featuring readings by poet D.A. Powell, Peter Orner, and Oscar Villalon. 7PM, FREE.
Friday 11/4: City Lights co-founder and poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti debuts his new poem, “At Sea,” as part of the House at 100 Arts Gala centennial at the Meridian Gallery. “At Sea” will be followed by A reading by Jack Hirschman and a discussion with the two poets in conversation on their latest works. 7-9PM, $10 suggested donation.
Saturday 11/5: Level Up novelist and illustrator Gene Yang discusses his newest work, and the experience of using graphic novels as his storytelling medium of choice. 1-2:30PM FREE. Bitter in the Mouth author Monique Truong anchors the Hedgebrook Alumnae Leadership Conference-sponsored literary evening at CCA. 5-6PM, sliding scale.
Sunday 11/3: SF multi media artist and writer Mitzi Wortman returns to Bird and Beckett for an installation of “Brave Girls.” Produced alongside performers Marsha Field, Janet Bogardus and Kathryn Eldredge, the show “explore themes arising for women in the shadow of traumatic early experience and other daunting challenges encountered during maturation.” Note: the show is for adults-please leave the kiddies at home 2PM FREE.
