National Poetry Month Day 19: “Mirror” by Rachel Richardson

By

Welcome to The Rumpus’s National Poetry Month project. We’ll be running a new poem from a different poet each day for the month of April.

Mirror

All day I had been photographing boats.
A study in angles: light on water,
shade on water. In a thunderstorm
was where he asked me. Among
fishermen casting. I could not look
and see a face without the frame
of froth and rain, the sudden waves
up against the pier. He was there, yes,
and I spoke the word, and the glinting ring
was on my finger, all of it, but
we were swallowed, we were in its belly,
our little feet so easily knocked
out from under us—
