“The Never-to-Be Bride”

Rumpus Funny Women editor Elissa Bassist rocks the New York Times Modern Love column.

“That online conversation was our last. Once he signed off, he was gone for good. At that moment, those children we had planned died, or were never born, or could have been born if things had gone differently. It was like when we planned our breakfast nook, and we agreed we both hated crosswords and wouldn’t be doing them on Sunday mornings. We wouldn’t be doing this and we wouldn’t be doing that.”

  1. Elissa, this is an excellent essay. It’s sharp, intimate, and wise. My only question is, did you ever meet Dan face-to-face? Five years is an awfully long time to have such a close, strictly online and phone-based relationship. Why did you choose to leave the details of the in-person encounters with Dan out of the essay?

Elissa, your article is fantastic! It catches the reader’s interest with the first line and holds it. It makes one want to know more. How often did you see Dan during those years? Why do you think you and Dan did not get married? Are you married now? Write another “installment” about you and Dan.
