Monday 9/17: Litquake and Booksmith host Irvine Welsh for the launch of Skagboys, the author’s recent release and prequel to Trainspotting. Welsh will be in conversation with Alan Black, followed by a multimedia presentation, no-host bar, music by DJ Se666undo and an Audience Q&A. $12, 7pm.
Tuesday 9/18: Two bay area original literary events happen tonight. Feast of Words hosted by the SOMArts Cultural Center is a monthly dinner party where writers and foodies come together to eat, write, and share. $5, 7pm. Write Club mirrors the spirit of (mostly) everyone’s Palahniuk book, pitting two writers together to produce an audience favorite under time pressure. $5, 8pm, The Make Out Room.
Wednesday 9/19: The 48th annual Big Book Sale begins today and runs through the 23rd at the Festival Pavilion, Fort Mason Center. Over 500,000 books and media articles will be on sale for $3 or less, with proceeds benefiting the the SF Public Library’s programs for children, youth and adults. More information here.
Thursday 9/20: Stanford Stegner Fellow and PEN/Studzinski Award winner NoViolet Bulawayo is in conversation with SF State Professor of Literature Sarah Ladipo Manyika at the Museum of the African Diaspora. Bulawayo will read the short story “In America,” inspired by the Zimbabwean Diaspora experience in the US. Free with MoAD admission, 6:30pm.
Friday 9/21: Voice of Witness hosts Sibylla Brodzinsky and Max Schoening, editors of Throwing Stones at the Moon for a discussion on the volume dedicated to bringing citizen stories to the forefront of Colombia’s decades-long internal conflict. Saturday 9/22: San Francisco Center for the Book hosts Roadworks, its ninth annual steamroll printing festival from 12-5pm on Rhode Island St in the Mission. The street fair includes a day-long public printmaking showcase presented with local food and fine craft vendors. Using a three-ton construction steamroller and Rhode Island Street as a letterpress bed, a team of artists and printers print large-scale prints from three-foot-square hand-carved linoleum blocks.
