Monday 10/1: Banned by the Bay and Project Censored discuss the role of modern media in censorship and the most censored headlines of 2012. Free, 7:30pm.
Tuesday 10/2: Booksmith and the Huffington Post Book Club of SF co-host the launch for acclaimed author Scott Hutchin’s major debut, A Working Theory of Love. The novel follows the arc of “a disaffected man who learns – with the help of a sentient computer that speaks in his deceased father’s voice – to make peace not just with his past but with his future.” Free, 7:30pm.
Wednesday 10/3: Nick Flynn previews Litquake 2012 with a set of free shows at San Jose State’s Center for Literary Arts, where he’ll read from his poetry collections including Another Bullshit Night in Suck City. 7pm.
Thursday 10/4: Oakland’s experimental film collective Shapeshifters Cinema presents poet Tommy Becker’s video poems” collection, Tape Number One, a “ollection of short videos made up of found footage, spoken word, music, performance, graphic design and sound collage. Join us as we witness the unfolding of TAPE NUMBER ONE into live spoken word/video performances.” Free, 8pm.
Friday 10/5: Southern Exposure kicks off a month long residency partnership with the Center for Tactical Magic, who will be developing participatory installations on-site throughout October. Opening tonight. Free, 12-6pm.
Saturday 10/6: Litquake holds its final free outdoor reading in the Litquake in the Castro series for 2012. Featuring Meg Day, Daphne Gottlieb, Brontez Purnell, Oscar Raymundo, and Rob Rosen. Free, 1pm.
Sunday 10/7: The Contemporary Jewish Museum hosts Drawn Out Stories: Comic Book Art and Artists as part of the Litquake Museum Crawl. Featuring regular Rumpus contributors Paul Madonna, MariNaomi and Chelsea Martin, as well as New York based artists Gabrielle Bell, Tom Kaczynski, Noah Van Sciver and graphic novelist Thien Pham. 3:30pm, free with museum admission.
