I know, you think contests are bullshit. They charge money and you “never win.” But listen, that’s what I thought too. Then I entered Summer Literary Seminar’s contest a couple years ago, won, and got my ass sent to Kenya, all-expenses paid, and it was the experience of a lifetime. This year’s fiction judge is Mary Gaitskill, who is the same judge who picked my story, “Cafe de Flore.” Honestly, being chosen by Mary Gaitskill would have been worth the entrance fee. But a trip to Kenya, people? Priceless. Those of you with wanderlust may want to consider this.
