Magic Relic City

“Maybe I don’t need to be worried, he said. You’re too weird for anyone but me to want.”

An excerpt from Rumpus contributor Jennine Capó Crucet latest novel, Magic Relic City, is featured in Guernica this week and edited by Rumpus essays editor Roxane Gay.

The story is a panorama of heartbreak, and about missing somebody you still have. Lizet is about to move to New York, but before she does, she ruminates on leaving her boyfriend. “To let her heart screw over her brain—that’s the worst best thing that could happen to anyone.”
