Rumpus columnist Steve Almond reviews Chris Ware’s Building Stories for The New Republic.

As a self-proclaimed nitwitted graphic novel critic with no qualifications, Almond beautifully reviews not only the content of Building Stories but also shares his experience reading the “weirdo picture book” (as described by his kids). He writes:

“What makes Ware’s achievement singular is this ability to immerse the reader so deeply in the consciousness of his characters that we can enter their lives at any point, and feel emotionally involved with them.”

Caroline Kangas calls both Seattle and San Francisco home (though she currently resides in the latter).
