The last time I interviewed Nick I told him how much I loved “Palaces of Montezuma” from the new record.
“You like that one?” he said with a smile. “It almost didn’t make it on the record.”
“You’re kidding!”
“My wife said she’d divorce me if we didn’t put it on there.”
As we end 2012, let’s all thank Susie for giving Nick the nudge to make sure track 8 of Grinderman 2 made it to the final cut.

As far as records go these days, there’s so much mp3 shuffling and downloading single songs, people forget the meticulous art of not only composing and recording the music, but how to place the order on the record. Listen to every release from Nick Cave and you’ll realize the songs couldn’t have been ordered any other way.
“Palaces of Montezuma” is a breath after hammering us with Kitchenette on track 7. It’s a sentimental love song (apologies to Nick for using that adjective), before dropping into the loopy, psychedelic “Bellringer Blues” on track 9.
“The spinal cord of JFK wrapped in Marilyn Monroe’s negligee, I give to you.”
How romantic is that? The song is pretty much, ….hey, babe, let me show you how much I love you and shower you with gifts that could barely match how much you mean to me….
And what does Nick want in return for all of these gifts? He answers in the chorus:
“Come on baby, let’s get out of the cold and gimme gimme gimme your precious love for me to hold.”
Baby, just give me your love. Just give me your love.
