The Girl Canon

Those Boy Canon books were the ones that I read throughout the years I was in high school. And, let me make clear, I have no end of affection for those books…The problem, in hindsight, was that those books helped me understand what it must mean to be a young man, and very little about what it meant to be a young woman. Instead, I developed a clear picture of the kind of woman I didn’t want to be, so that I could better attract the young men who I was reading about in books.

At The Believer’s blog, Madeleine Watts writes about A Girl is a Half-Formed Thing and the importance of coming-of-age books for young women.
