The Rumpus Music Editor oversees all aspects of the music section, including the ongoing series Albums of Our Lives and Songs of Our Lives. We are looking for someone who is savvy and knowledgeable in the intersection between literature and music. The right person is very familiar with The Rumpus and the kind of content we publish, is passionate about both books and records, and will have ideas about how to expand and grow our music section.
This is a significant time commitment, so please only apply if you have the time to fulfill the role. Editor’s duties include:
- Reading both solicited and unsolicited (via Submittable) submissions and pitches, and accepting and curating pieces based on The Rumpus’s mission and tone.
- Daily correspondence with contributors regarding in-process submissions. The editor works with contributors through all stages of the editorial process, and is available to field questions, give editorial notes, and work with contributors to craft the piece so that the final version is appropriate for the site.
- Correspondence with publicists and artists. The editor both receives requests and generates requests on behalf of The Rumpus.
- Working with our Interviews Editor, you will help to land and edit interviews with a wide range of musical artists.
- Ongoing collaboration with the managing editor regarding scheduling of music section pieces.
- Copyediting of pieces for final publication.
We’re seeking applicants with some prior editorial experience, experience handling submissions and copyediting work, and a strong familiarity with our content and tone. This is a volunteer position.
If you are interested, please email [email protected] with a resume and couple of sentences about why you are our next Music Editor. Make sure to also tell us a bit about yourself, your ideas for the site, and your availability.
