Sometimes the Internet is an amazing thing, as proven by the campaign to memorialize Outkast on Stone Mountain. For those of us not in the know, Stone Mountain is a Mt. Rushmore–sized memorial to the heroes of the Southern Confederate cause—we’re talking Davis, Lee, and Jackson blasted into three acres of stone, along with a theme park celebrating the thing, all situated just outside of Atlanta. Oh yeah, and the location served as the site of the founding of the second Ku Klux Klan in 1915. The monument has gathered some attention since the removal of the Confederate flag from South Carolina’s state house; but, as okayplayer. has said, “taking down a flag is as simple as pulling a string” but “taking down a memorial that’s blasted into the side of a got damn mountain is tantamount to blowing a 1,700 foot tall geological landmark sky-high.” So what better way to address the issue than by carving massive portraits of Atlanta’s Outkast as an update to the monument? The petition, drafted by Mack Williams, the former animation director of Archer, offers that alternative:
“By no means do we wish to erase or destroy the current carving, which, regardless of its context, is an impressive and historic work of art. We simply wish to add new carvings, of Atlanta hip-hop duo Outkast, to the mountainside. There’s plenty of room.
“I believe that Daddy Fat Sacks and Three Stacks should be carved riding in a Cadillac (as is their wont). This will help the new carving blend nicely with the Confederates who are on horseback.”
