The New York–based band premieres the song “Conquest” today on The Rumpus. The track is off their album Revol, which is upcoming on Big Picnic Records.
Sons of an Illustrious Father is comprised of Ezra Miller, who you might remember from his roles in Trainwreck, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and We Need to Talk About Kevin; Lilah Larson; and Josh Aubin.
The song’s release is accompanied by a graphic novel written and illustrated by band member Lilah Larson, CONQUEST, which illustrates the track’s subject matter. Of the song and graphic novel, Lilah Larson says:
The song is deeply indebted lyrically to the intersectional feminist writings of bell hooks, Dorothy Roberts, Andrea Smith, Andrea Ritchie, and Winona LaDuke, among others. Musically, I think of it as the love child of the topical folk song tradition—Woody Guthrie, Dylan, etc.—and politically conscious punk a la The Clash, Gang of Four, or Bikini Kill, all swaddled in cinematic grandiosity (thanks largely to our producer Howard Bilerman). The writing of the song…was a very visual process, and the three of us are huge comic book nerds who have always wanted to do something like this together, so the comic book project came about very naturally.
