Musical pioneer Genya Ravan, who’s been featured on The Rumpus, has a new album in the works and a musical play opening in New York. In the early 60s Ravan founded Goldie and the Gingerbreads, the first all-female band signed to a major label. She went on to front the experimental jazz-fusion band Ten Wheel Drive, record as a solo artist, and become the first female independent music producer for the Dead Boys and others. The play, Rock and Roll Refugee, will focus on Ravan’s early life on the Lower East Side and the forces that shaped her career. At the Royal Family Performing Arts Space.
