Walter Mosley reflects on his father’s life in the Deep South and the influence he had on his son’s growth as a writer:

When I was 13, I asked him what he wanted me to be when I grew up. He said he wanted me to do whatever I wanted, that he had no directive. I took his lessons from poverty and decided to become an artist — someone who makes something from nothing.
