Alicia Bognanno’s been fronting Bully since 2013, writing alt-rock songs that hold a close link to the glorious years of 1990s, but without sounding retromaniac or stuck in the past. Losing, the band’s first LP, was just released from Sub Pop.
Bognanno isn’t afraid to speak out about personal struggles, mental health, and current affairs on the album’s twelve tracks, all while strumming her angst away on her self-assembled guitar—an audio recording graduate, she also engineered and mixed the analog recordings cut with guitarist Clayton Parker and bassist Reece Lazarus at Steve Albini’s Electrical Audio Studios in Chicago.
“To me, music is a personal and emotional thing,” the musician told Uproxx. “So if I was going to take emotion or personal situations out of it, then that would feel more like just a product, because it would just be an emotionless, senseless piece of music, which to me, isn’t real music at all.”
