“There’s no separating art from reality,” says Peter Oren, introducing his new album, Anthropocene, out now via Western Vinyl. He continues:
The reality is that our politics are guided by our emotions, and music has the capacity to demonstrate those emotions, at least on an individual level. And if you can talk to someone on an individual level, you might be able to have a more useful conversation than if you’re talking to a roomful of people.
The twenty-five-year-old, Indiana-born artist has put together a collection of songs to sing out his disillusionment regarding the future of humanity. Straddling the line between folk and country, his gloomy ballads are a wake-up call for listeners living in the perilous age of the Anthropocene and its disastrous effects on the planet. “What I want from songwriters is honesty, nuance, details, metaphors,” Oren told Gold Flake Paint. “Should we all write protest songs? Only if that’s what’s on your mind. I can’t help but write political songs. These thoughts eat me up, so I grapple with them by writing.”
