Four years and a new President of the United States since last releasing new music, Merrill Garbus, aka tUnE-yArDs, is back with I Can Feel You Creep Into My Private Life. tUnE-yArDs’s fourth studio album, out now from 4AD, is also the first to be created in close collaboration with Nate Brenner, Garbus’s longtime artistic partner.
A meditation on the place and responsibility of a cis, white, female musician into the contemporary cultural discussion, the album layers different decades of pop music—from synth samples straight out the ‘80s to the Afrobeat vocals backing Garbus’s words—and shares some of the most personal and straightforward lyrics of her career so far.
Tackling the themes of her new work, Garbus told Vox.com:
“I’m a white woman taking music that comes from communities of color, queer communities, and I am—as so many musicians do—taking those influences and turning them into music that’s under my name.”
