Earlier this month, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt released The Best American Short Stories 2018, edited by Roxane Gay. “I am looking for the artful way any given story is conveyed,” Gay writes in her introduction to the collection, “but I also love when a story has a powerful message, when a story teaches me something about the world.”
We congratulate all the writers included in this year’s anthology; their work represents the importance of literature and writing at this fraught cultural moment. We also wanted to give a special shout-out to regular Rumpus contributor Maria Anderson, included for her story, “Cougar,” first published in the Iowa Review.
