“There is something of a binge drinking belt across the north of the country, running westward from New England, Pennsylvania and Ohio to Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota and Montana.”

Atlantic Cities dissects binge drinking, looking at state-by-state patterns. The association with the North Country led to the speculation that “cold winters might play a role.” Some other economic and demographic associations were found, but why not just place the blame where it belongs — on winter.
