National Poetry Month Day 9: “Stone Cold Jane” by Cornelius Eady

By

“Stone Cold Jane” is one of the tracks from Cornelius Eady’s new chapbook from Kattywompus Press, Book of Hooks. I say tracks because these are as much songs as poems. “Stone Cold Jane” appears with the kind permission of Kattywompus Press.

scjaheadshotThe girl likes to roll
Got her rockstar skates
On the flat track, baby
Better have what it takes

The good doctor in Spanx
Ain’t any doubt
Hoof on her wheels
Time for a bout

Stone Cold Jane
Stone Cold Jane
In the classroom it’s theory
On the track, it’s pain

The girl likes to win
Elbows and knees
Just a blur as she spins
No apologies

A gal and her pals
Down on derby night
Time for some fun
Time for a fight

Stone Cold Jane
Stone Cold Jane
In the classroom, it’s theory
On the track, it’s pain.

She’s racking up points
She’s cracking the whip
She’s brushing ‘em off
With a bump of her hips.

Round and round
And round again
Goodbye, real world,
Hello, Jane!

Stone Cold Jane
Stone Cold Jane
In the classroom it’s theory
On the track, it’s pain.

Words and Music: Cornelius Eady
CE: Loops and Vocals
Bernie Heveron: Lead Guitar

Author’s note: Devoney Looser teaches with me in the English Dept. at my present job at the University of Missouri-Columbia where she is a respected scholar in 18th Century Women’s Lit. But she also has a life as a blocker on a local roller derby team where her handle is Stonecold Janeausten. Thought that needed a theme song.
